So.. I just started enjoying writing my now 3000+ word essay.
It’s a feminist critique of the artistic canon and how these two female photographers are re-framing women of myth and history with more favorable imagery and symbolism. Here’s a quote:
“To put this painting in perspective, replace Hypatia, a female philosopher and mathematician, with any other prominent male philosopher. Would it then seem normal to see images of Plato or Hippocrates leaning against a wall dramatically, trying in vain to cover themselves with their beards?”
Yeesss.. I’m having fun now.
